Pays de la Loire blows away EWEA OFFSHORE 2011

Axel BREGLIANO - 08-déc.-2011 14:17:44

The Pays de la Loire region (in western France) will be present at the EWEA OFFSHORE 2011 trade show in Amsterdam (in The Netherlands), which will take place between 29 November and 1 December. The French region’s pavilion will provide visitors with the opportunity to better understand its offshore-energy sector. The region will also host a conference that will take place at the trade fair on 29 November. On 3 November, ALSTOM announced its decision to set up an industrial site in St Nazaire (in the Pays de la Loire region), with the creation of two production facilities for nacelles and generators of wind turbines. This decision highlights the appeal of the Pays de la Loire region for important industrial projects relating to offshore wind energy and, more generally, to the offshore-renewable-energy sector. Pays de la Loire is intent on taking the lead in the marine-renewable-energy sector in France: its prime objective is to reach 1,400 MW in offshore wind energy produced within the region by 2017, as part of the overall call for tender, in France, which was for 6,000 MW. The region is undertaking various short- and medium-term projects linked to offshore energy. These include SEM-REV, an experimental site which will be located in the open sea and whose aim will be to harness wave energy. SEM-REV will also test the small-size production of offshore wind energy and will be operational from early 2012. SEM-REEF is another of the region’s projects. It will be a test site devoted to floating offshore wind energy and will be one of the few projects aimed at performing life-size experiments. The Institut français de recherche pour l’exploitation de la mer (or IFREMER, the French research institute for the sea) has identified the site as one of the most significant projects to host France Energies Marines, i.e. France’s national offshore renewable-energy platform. The Pays de la Loire region, which faces the Atlantic, on the west coast of France, is fast turning into a premier centre for offshore wind energy: in terms of R&D, industrial capacity and logistics, everything is now in place for the offshore-wind-energy sector to start growing rapidly across the region. The Pays de la Loire has advanced engineering, research and testing facilities. In terms of R&D, the region possesses two flagship institutions. Firstly, there is the Ecole Centrale de Nantes, which is acknowledged throughout Europe for its commitment to the offshore-renewable-energy sector. Secondly, the region has the Jules Verne Wind Tunnel at the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment (or CSTB, France’s scientific and technical centre for the construction industry) — a national R&D centre devoted to the interactions between wind and large structures. Several high-technology clusters further strengthen the appeal of Pays de la Loire in the field of ren ewable energy. The EMC2 cluster of excellence, specialising in metal assemblies and complex composites, runs the world-class Jules Verne Technological Research Institute. This institute is devoted to advanced technology in the production of composites, metals and hybrid structures. It also houses Technocampus Océan, which is a platform focused on innovation in metals, oceanic applications and sea-based forms of energy. Pays de la Loire is also outstanding in terms of logistical services and facilities. The Port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire is the leading port on France’s Atlantic coast and the fourth most important port in France. It specialises in the transport and handling of large industrial assemblies and heavy freight; it also offers land, which is available for development, as well as infrastructures and logistical facilities that are tailored to the needs of operators. The following companies, which are all key regional players in the offshore-renewable-energy sector, will be on the Pays de la Loire pavilion (Hall 11 —11550a) at the EWEA OFFSHORE 2011 trade show. ROLLIX develops pitch and yaw bearings for Alstom Haliade 150-6MW offshore turbine

Axel BREGLIANO - 05-déc.-2011 10:15:39

ROLLIX, one of the key players in the French offshore wind-turbine sector, has developed pitch and yaw bearings for the new Alstom Haliade 150-6MW offshore wind turbine — the largest offshore wind turbine manufactured to date. Within the framework of a strategic partnership, Alstom, a world leader in power generation, and ROLLIX, its historical supplier, have developed the slewing ring bearings for both the blades and the nacelle (i.e. the outer casing) of the turbines ROLLIX’s specialised engineers, working near Nantes (in western France), collaborated closely with the Alstom team to design the slewing ring bearings that will be used for the new offshore-wind turbine. The slewing bearings, which control blade rotation (pitching) and nacelle rotation (yawing), have gone through a highly specific development process. The components that ROLLIX has engineered were optimised so that they could take up as little space as possible, and yet withstand the loads of the new offshore-wind turbine that features the world’s longest blades, which are 73.5-metres long each. The pitch and yaw bearings, which feature impressively sized rings of almost 4 metres in diameter, were then assembled on the wind turbine itself in Saint-Nazaire, the large Atlantic port located close to the ROLLIX plant (in the Pays de la Loire region of western France).  The ROLLIX slewing ring bearings are perfect for use in the offshore-wind-energy industry, since they are made of strong and precise components that can withstand the high speeds, high loads and salty environment involved in this segment of the energy sector. ROLLIX boasts a number of achievements worldwide and is a supplier to major international wind-turbine manufacturers. Bearings made by the specialist French company are found on more than 37,000 wind turbines internationally, representing 52GW in established power, including 1.5GW of offshore energy. From 5kW to over 10MW, ROLLIX supplies all the manufacturers in the wind-turbine field. ROLLIX designs specific bearings that are suited to a wind turbine’s lifespan. The company’s special sealing system makes for completely tight bearings. It can also provide integrated bearings with an automatic-lubrication system. ROLLIX’s finish by grinding is a state-of-the-art technology, used for the double-row slewing rings. About ROLLIX ROLLIX, part of the Defontaine Group, has been designing and manufacturing special bearings and slewing rings that range from 150mm to 7000mm in diameter, with and without gears, since 1974. The company is one of the key players and a pioneer in France’s wind-turbine sector, within the framework of offshore-development projects. ROLLIX will take part in the EWEA OFFSHORE 2011 trade show in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) from 29 November to 1 December 2011 (Stand 11550), and the EWEA 2012 conference in Copenhagen (Denmark) from 16 to 19 April 2012. VEECTOR’s SIT System ® helps you to ride pillion safely

Axel BREGLIANO - 22-nov.-2011 13:45:42

VEECTOR has created the Secure Individual Transport System (or SIT System®). It is an innovative, efficient and user-friendly device that provides safe travel for passengers riding pillion on motorbikes and scooters. The SIT System® comes in two versions — the PAN-BELT and the SPYDER-BELT — and uses the driver’s weight to secure the passenger. VEECTOR’s innovation is patented and has proved very popular in France; the company is now seeking distributors throughout Europe. VEECTOR’s SIT System® is made of a flexible, non-slip pad that rests on the saddle of the rider at the front. This pad is linked to a sturdy strap that secures the passenger onto the vehicle. The passenger is, therefore, safeguarded in position by the driver’s weight, which rests upon the removable saddle. The saddle provides anchorage according to the difference in weight between the two riders, and so the passenger no longer has to worry about accelerations, bends, or even falling asleep.  Although the risk of fall is considerably reduced, in the unlikely event of an accident, the passenger is free to move because, ultimately, he (or she) is neither fastened to the driver nor to the vehicle. In addition to preventing any risk of falling, the system reduces the impact of the passenger’s weight when negotiating bends. Whilst it is an ideal device for children aged five and over, it is also an appropriate device for adults. The first version of the SIT System® is the adjustable PAN-BELT, which can fit waists measuring from 60cm to 1100cm. It fastens around the passenger’s waist and is ideal for use in an urban environment, on medium-sized motorbikes or scooters. There is also a sport version of the SIT System® — the SPYDER-BELT — which goes up to size XXL. The SPYDER-BELT features an adjustable harness that secures the passenger. It provides safety to passengers during sporty driving, lengthy trips and when using powerful motorbikes. This is thanks to optimised support around the torso, which also increases the passenger’s comfort, especially for adults. Since neither the PAN-BELT nor the SPYDER-BELT requires to be fastened to the vehicle, both devices can be installed in under a minute. Their small size makes them easy to store under the saddle, or in a bag. They offer a simple solution for problems relating to transporting a passenger on a motorcycle or scooter. About VEECTOR A specialist in motorbike and scooter accessories, VEECTOR provides ingenious, easy-to-use products that meet the needs of users. The company was founded in 2008 and has since changed the approach to passenger security for those riding pillion on motorcycles, particularly children. In addition to the devices based on the SIT System®, the company is currently working on other innovative products that are approaching the manufacturing phase. These include removable self-tightening stirrups that are designed to solve the problems children can have reaching the toe clips on certain motorbikes or scooters.
