So French, so good ! France adds zest to its gourmet exports !

Interview : Christophe MONNIER, the expert for the Gourmet sector at UBIFRANCE What else could you expect from France, where gastronomic quality is so vital? Yet cultivating taste buds the world over also pays off in economic terms; French Gourmet as a sector is worth 7 Billion Euros, covering 250 categories, amounting to 16% of the French food industry’s total exports. 1200 companies, 90% of them SMEs, are actively seeking and opening up export markets. What French people consider as “typical”, the rest of the world perceives as symbolizing culinary art that can only be “Made in France.” Christophe Monnier, the expert for the Gourmet sector at UBIFRANCE, describes a high-end market with a broad range of dynamic diversity. He starts with baked goods, biscuits and chocolate , accounting for 50% of French gourmet exports. In the vast feast of consumables to be delighted in, two characteristically French trends stand out. First, there is an absolute respect for authentic flavor and tradition – neatly summed up by the French word terroir . Each gourmet product has its unique story, and that is how they need to be marketed. Secondly, with health concerns and awareness coming to the fore, carefully prepared organic and eco-friendly brands coming from France engender recognition and trust all around the world. M ajor players in the gourmet sector like Valrhona (high quality chocolates), Rougie (famous French foie gras), Bridor (French bakery), Boiron (frozen fruit and vegetable purées for gastronomy), and many other French companies are learning to be more reactive in providing service for their foreign accounts, to be more organized in responding to demanding foreign markets, in following up on orders quickly. Reliable logistics is the name of the game. Experts at UBIFRANCE like Christophe Monnier help up to 830 prospecting companies leverage their efforts in such programs as Saveurs de France , where French exporters demonstrate their know-how in new markets, such as in Latin America or in Asia. He also sets up highly selective – and profitable -- encounters with Purchasing Agents. Naturally, French suppliers devote their greatest effort to the French domestic market, eventually moving on to satisfy demand in French-speaking zones. Yet growth in 2013 was hard to come by in countries such as Switzerland (0.4%) and Belgium (4.2%), which offer relatively saturated outlets. Encouraged by the French emigration to London, more intrepid companies crossed the channel to the UK (8.9%). The more innovative companies moved beyond these traditional markets. This is where double-digit sparks fly, with Austria (17.1%) and Russia (13.5%) providing substantial growth in 2013. In fact, the further exporters go, the bigger the rewards are. In Asia, China weighed in at 33.3%, Singapore at 14.3% and Hong Kong at 12.8% growth. As far as the Middle East is concerned, companies marketing gourmet to Dubai and Saudi Arabia were rewarded by a growth rate of more than 20%. According to Mr. Monnier, there are three prestigious showcases for French talent. He mentions SIAL and EUROPAIN known to be venue s where deals get done, especially for consumer products. The ultimate culinary event has to be the Cuisine Summit at SIRHA in Lyon. All the French know-how is mobilized to create an exceptional experience in 40,000 square meters, capped by the prestigious prize, the “Bocuse d’Or”, a televised cooking competition among the world’s most renowned chefs representing their countries.   Interview : Tatiana Miron, UBIFRANCE’s Export Advisor for the Agriculture and Food sector. With the mechanization of farming these past few decades, France has demonstrated its know-how in developing high-performing Agro-technology solutions worldwide. 2 nd importer and 5 th exporter for international markets in farming technologies, France is undoubtedly one of the major players in the sector, with 9% market share worldwide. “French companies are recognized and quite present internationally,” explains Tatiana Miron, UBIFRANCE’s Export Advisor for the Agriculture and Food sector. France has 230 enterprises that export farming equipment. Most of them are SMEs (60 %). Among them are companies like Grégoire Besson, Kuhn, Exel Industries and Manitou.   “70 % of French production in farming equipment is exported,” points out Tatiana Miron. When the exporting company is French, doors open more easily As an example, in South Africa, the exports for French farming machines increased 6 % between 2013 and 2012. Local prospects started noticing the Kuhn, Manitou, Pellenc or Berthoud logos hard at work. “These companies found the right distributors and they are focused on specific niches, ones whose needs they really understand,” analyzes the UBIFRANCE’s expert. In a completely different business segment, that of equipment designed and manufactured for the food industry, “France is still the reference throughout the world,” asserts Tatiana Miron. “When the exporting company is French, doors open easier.” With an international market share of 5.4 %, France is ranked 5th, behind Germany and Italy, two big leaders in the market for the food industry’s equipment. Innovative, flexible and well-adapted to its markets To go into detail, “the French offer is well-positioned for producing machines and implements for industrial preparation of food and drinks,” says UBIFRANCE’s advisor. France is also very present in baking and pastry equipment, plus biscuit-making as well as for specialized implements designed for meat. According to Tatiana Miron, “All of these specialties are growing at an exponential rate.” “France is displaying all its ability to innovate. Flexible and well-adapted to each market, French companies have become highly specialized,” she adds. This is certainly the strategy the major French trademarks in the sector have adapted, like Bongard, Serac and Cermex. They combine their knowledge of different markets and their own reactivity to respond quickly and well to calls for bids. This competitive edge is what allows them to reinforce themselves on several market niches. Den Franske Ambassades Handelsafdeling UBIFRANCE arrangerede torsdag den 30. maj en champagne-smagning for fagfolk i vin- og restaurationsbranchen. 12 medlemmer af det franske champagnesyndikat « SyndicatGénéral des Vignerons de la Champagne (SGV) » fik dermed lejlighed til at præsentere deres produkter og undersøge mulighederne for samarbejde med skandinaviske fagfolk. Smagningen fandt sted i Ambassadørens residens, det Thottske Palæ på Kgs. Nytorv, hvor 115 besøgende smagte champagner i de prestigefyldte rammer. Producenterne viste hermed deres vilje til at investere i det skandinaviske marked og friste de lokale forbrugere. Danske fagfolk fra vinbranchen fik mulighed for at opdage « Champagnes de Vignerons » producenternes diversitet og forhåbentlig dermed få lyst til at indgå nye forretningsrelationer. Den franske delegation var sammensat af virksomheder fra de fire vinområder i Champagneregionen som ialt tæller 5000 producenter. De sælger champagne under det kollektive mærke « Les Champagnes de Vignerons », som blev lanceret af SGV syndikatet i 2001. Champagneregionens fire områder er: Côte des Bar, Côte des Blancs, Montagne de Reims og Vallée de la Marne. « Champagnes de Vignerons » mærket garanterer sporbarhed og kvalitet som forpligter producenten og hans domæne. Der er tale om sjældne og udtryksfulde champagner, som afspejler et unikt terroirpræg og hver enkelt producents ekspertise, som er videreført fra generation til generation. Innovation står også højt på dagsordenen hvilket sikrer kontinuiteten og kvaliteten i champagnerne. Champagneregionen er Frankrigs og verdens største vinområde målt på salgsværdi. Eksporten har været markant stigende de sidste 10 år, og har dermed styrket champagnens omdømme på verdensplan. Danmark er et vigtigt marked for champagne, idet importen er steget med 7% i volumen og 10% i værdi (110 millioner kroner) i 2012. Franske vine stærkt tilbage i Danmark

Den franske Ambassades Handelsafdeling – UBIFRANCE arrangerede vinsmagningen VINE FRA FRANKRIG, den 12. marts 2013 på Hotel Marriott i København, hvor 27 franske vinproducenter fik muligheden for at præsentere deres vine for mere end 100 danske importører, restauratører og pressefolk. Interessen for franske vine er stigende, selvom de har været hårdt presset de seneste år med konkurrence fra blandt andet italienske og oversøiske vine. Forespørgslen blandt danske vinimportører er hovedsagelig rettet mod Champagne, Bordeaux og økologiske vine. Producenterne som deltog i vinsmagningen var meget tilfredse med fremmødet af de besøgende fagfolk som viste stort kendskab og professionalisme. Frankrigs Ambassadør i Danmark, Véronique BUJON-BARRE, besøgte udstillingen og havde lejlighed til at tale med samtlige udstillere. Det franske eksportråd, UBIFRANCE DANMARK, stod for et fremstød for franske fødevareproducenter den 14. november 2012 på Den Franske Ambassade. 12 franske delikatesseproducenter deltog i arrangementet. De søger alle nye samarbejdspartnere og salgsudvikling på det danske marked. Et bredt udvalg af produkter og regionale specialiteter fra Alsace, Korsika, Bordeaux, Marseille, osv. blev præsenteret. REUNIPECHE exhibits impressive catch at European Seafood in Brussels

REUNIPECHE, the foremost player in the fishing sector on Réunion island (France’s overseas département in the Indian Ocean), will take part in the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels (Belgium) from 24 to 26 April 2012. The company will be presenting various types of fish, including albacore and bigeye tuna, as well as coryphene sea bream. An expert in the fishing, filleting and distribution of large deep-sea fish, REUNIPECHE specialises in swordfish, tunny, albacore, yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna, among other species that it commercializes. Albacore, yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna yielded prolific catches in 2011. In the same year, there was also an unusually large catch of coryphene sea bream and mahi-mahi, which are — whether fresh or frozen — greatly appreciated by American consumers, in particular. REUNIPECHE will be present at the European Seafood Exposition on Stand 5-301. The event will take place from 24 to 26 April of this year, in the Belgian capital. REUNIPECHE is based on Réunion island, which is an overseas French département located near Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. REUNIPECHE’s fishing is concentrated in the seas off the southern and eastern coasts of Madagascar, around Réunion, and in waters around Mauritius. To the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), this is Zone 51, which encompasses the Western Indian Ocean. The sheer wealth of species in Réunion waters allows the company to present a wide range of fish only accessible to deep-sea-fishing operators, and those fish include marlin, shark and sailfish, among others. Most catches are pulled in live, which guarantees their freshness and quality. The fish are then killed using the Taniguchi method, developed in Japan, whereby nylon wire is threaded through the fish’s nerve centres. As a result, the fish does not become stressed, hence no toxins are released in the process. The fish is then cooled in a brine tub containing iced seawater, prior to being preserved on ice inside a refrigerated hold. REUNIPECHE specialises in quality products and prides itself on being very meticulous in the way that it catches, stores, cuts, packs and transports the fish. The company’s products are labelled Class Extra in terms of food certification, and can be prepared raw without any problem. Export sales account for 50% of REUNIPECHE’s turnover, especially in fresh swordfish and tuna filets. Since the start of 2012, REUNIPECHE has been supplying the Japanese market: each and every week, four tonnes of fish are shipped out to the Tokyo market, directly from Réunion island. Already established on the European, Asian and American markets, REUNIPECHE seeks to continue developing its export business. The company, more particularly, intends to focus its efforts on the Japanese and Russian markets. About REUNIPECHE REUNIPECHE is based in Saint-Denis de la Réunion, on Réunion island. It is an integrated business that covers the entire fish-distribution supply chain: from the catching of the fish to its delivery to wholesalers. The company also works closely with various fishing fleets. REUNIPECHE provides fresh, high-quality products complete with certificate of origin and a health-responsibility guarantee (CEE agreement). Mere end 200 besøgende på vinmessen French Wine Discoveries

Den franske Ambassades Handelsafdeling – Ubifrance har i samarbejde med Wine 4 Trade arrangeret den 7. udgave af vinudstillingen French Wine Discoveries, der blev afholdt den 17. april 2012 på den Gamle Børs i København. På denne vinmesse præsenterede 37 fremtrædende franske vinproducenter spændende kvalitetsvine fra forskellige vindistrikter. Disse vine blev smagt med stor begejstring af de ca. 200 besøgende fagfolk fra den danske vinbranche. Ved denne lejlighed havde udstillerne udvalgt deres bedste vine til et specielt arrangement, hvor den franske Ambassadør, Véronique Bujon-Barré, kunne byde velkommen til 20 af sine kolleger og præsentere mangfoldigheden og kvaliteten i udbuddet af franske vine og spiritus. Vinturismen er også en glimrende måde at udbrede kendskabet til de franske vindistrikter på. Der blev derfor trukket lod om et 2 døgns ophold i Epernay i hjertet af champagne, og vinderen af lodtrækningen blev Vinmægleren A / S.
