With its 19 th edition, the MILLESIME BIO tradeshow has confirmed the position it holds as an international exchange venue for the organic winegrowing sector. As a unique meeting place both in France and worldwide, the tradeshow is enjoying positive loyalty on the part of exhibitors and visitors.
Exclusively open to organic certified wine, MILLESIME BIO has brought together 588 exhibitors with organic certification hailing from 13 countries, and 3,360 visitors of 38 different nationalities. Two business conventions (organic wine and food products) organised by Sud France Développement inside the tradeshow enclosure itself succeeded in attracting buyers from close to 75 companies working in major export and in European markets.
Exhibitors: building loyalty in the New World and promoting growth in Europe
While France, Spain and Italy still represented the top 3 runners among exhibitors, Austria and Germany were boosting their attendance this year. Wine traders and producers from South Africa, Egypt, Argentina and the United States also came back in 2012, demonstrating their loyalty to the tradeshow for the third or fourth year running.
Visitors: consolidating the Tradeshow’s appeal
The higher attendance at the tradeshow (3,360 visitors against 3,200 in 2011) confirms the interest of players in this business channel for organic wine, as well as the market’s dynamism against a background of economic crisis. Coming in increasing numbers, foreign visitors this year represented 22% of the total, headed by professionals from Benelux (16.7%), Germany (13%), North America (12.5%) and Scandinavia (11.5%). Wine merchants (19%) were the main visitors to the tradeshow, followed by importers (13%), wine traders (10.5%) and caterers (cafés, hotels & restaurants) (7.5%).
The tradeshow’s strong points
Wine sampling corners: an “enoteca” and an “Challenge Millésime Bio” contest award-winning wines area allowed visitors to sample each exhibitor’s vintages, as well as those that had received medals in the latest competition.
This year, the tradeshow highlighted the know-how and excellence found in the Languedoc-Roussillon regional organic wine offer. At the sampling corner for wines labelled “Sud de France”, a wine waiter was helping visitors discover a selection of organic “Languedoc-Roussillon” wines that have garnered awards at several world-renowned competitions or mentioned in magazines.
The tradeshow also promotes dialogue through roundtables and theme-specific conferences like the “Professional Meetings about Organic Winegrowing” whose theme this year was “French Organic Winegrowing within the European Context – Conditions and Prospects”.
The growth of the organic wine market has now become an underlying trend. It involves most wine-consuming countries and the entire range of distribution channels (wine merchants, caterers, mass retail, specialised networks etc). Founded in 1993 by a small group of Languedoc-Roussillon winemakers, MILLESIME BIO brings together producers from the world over every year so they can sample quality wines made from organic farming. The tradeshow enjoys financial support from the Languedoc-Roussillon Regional Council and the European Union.

This year, there will be no less than 2,000 animals from 64 breeds on display for the 75,000 visitors hailing from five continents. Over the years, the SOMMET DE L’ELEVAGE has become a major meeting place for livestock farming professionals. The 20 th edition of this French trade fair should feature over 1,250 exhibitors. As it did last year, the trade fair will also host the farming job forum organised by VetAgro Sup (an agronomist and veterinarian school) and APECITA (Association for Farming Managers’ Employment).
Every year, the SOMMET DE L’ÉLEVAGE increases its international appeal : 380 international exhibitors from about thirty countries and 2,500 visitors hailing from about sixty countries are expected in Clermont-Ferrand in 2011.
The International Business Club , headed by the ADEPTA (Association for the D evelopment of International Trade in Farming Products and Techniques), will offer a VIP welcome to foreign delegations, as well as organising guided tours of the trade fair, meetings with exhibitors and a presentation of France’s offer in terms of livestock farming, know-how and genetics.
Moreover, as part of the Year of Mexico in France, a specific reception procedure will be put in place to receive delegations of Mexican livestock farming managers.
It will also be possible for foreign visitors to take part in a host of professional side-events:
Close to twenty tours of livestock farms and food industry technical facilities (an insemination centre, a slaughterhouse, a meat sector research centre, etc.);
The 3 rd edition of the France/Africa encounters organised by the AFDI (French Farmers and International Development) and focusing on the relationship between food autonomy and family farming, in the presence of the Minister of Livestock Farming for Mali.
The France-Maghreb Forum, to be held over 2 days on the topic of “France, a partner for Maghreb countries in the development of their cattle meat sector”. This new event is organised by FranceAgriMer in partnership with France TERRE D’ELEVAGE.
Also marking the three days of the SOMMET DE L’ÉLEVAGE, there will be a number of visits by politicians and some international symposiums. Many topics will be featured in those conferences , including: the latest advances in genomic research, the tenderness of meat, the impact of rising and volatile raw materials costs on cattle birthing and fattening, etc.
As always, the “Sommets d’Or” competition will reward those exhibitors whose materials, products or services are the most innovative in the farming/livestock farming sector.

For winegrowing, winemaking and sector professionals, this real-time, virtual tradeshow represented a unique opportunity of multiplying dialogue and contacts on an international level, without having to travel and at a lesser cost.
In the same way as traditional tradeshows, with technology added, WineFair provided 3 styles of booth to exhibitors: plain, standard or design. Each style featured a calendar for use in arranging online meetings, the exhibitor’s business card, as well as videos, brochures and detailed descriptions of the wines and their estates.
WineFair provided visitors and exhibitors with the latest technology in real-time, interactive communication: webcams, audio-conferencing and chat. Given the great success of our live conferences during the first edition, the 2011 tradeshow bolstered that activity with a host of speakers from the wine industry dealing with all sector news items.
Close to 50 exhibitors participated in this innovative world of wine project, and over 4,300 visitors from all backgrounds, mainly importers, wholesalers, CHRs, sommeliers, wine retailers and journalists.

The 18 th edition of the Millésime Bio organic wine trade fair organised by the AIVB-LR ( Languedoc-Roussillon Organic Wine Trade Association ) was held at the Montpellier Exhibition Centre from January 24 th to 26 th , 2011. The event gathered 560 exhibitors hailing from 15 countries. The trade fair received financial support from the Languedoc-Roussillon Regional Council and the European Union. It was held at the same time as International Business Forum organised by Sud de France Export (Wine sector).
Total attendance at the Millésime Bio 2011 trade fair reached 3,200 visitors against 2,700 visitors in 2010, that is up 18% in 2011. 39 foreign nations were represented, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Dubai, Germany, Spain, the United States and the Scandinavian countries. The trade fair mostly attracted importers (18%), wine retailers (18%), wine wholesalers (10%) and HO-RE-CA (7%).
Wine made with grapes from organic farming meets the demand for authentic, quality products obtained from environmentally-friendly practises and using no GMOs, artificial pesticides or chemical fertilisers. It is one of the organic products attracting the most new consumers on the French market and is experiencing growing success in export. The market’s worldwide growth is affecting most wine-consuming countries and uses the full range of distribution circuits (wine retailers, HO-RE-CA, mass distribution, specialised networks).
The increase in the amount of visitors confirms the organic wine market’s momentum and the effectiveness of the synergies that have been set up with the Languedoc-Roussillon Region.
Comments made by participating businesses demonstrate their satisfaction:
“I find the trade fair is well organised. It seems to be becoming increasingly attractive, for the visitors come from many different countries. I hope the trade fair will continue to grow and that it will be a success next year once again.”
Emiliana Vineyards (Chile)
“I was pleasantly surprised by Millésime Bio 2011. I have made new international contacts as well as the contacts with our usual customers. I also enjoyed the time I spent with winegrower colleagues from other winemaking regions. Everything at Millésime Bio 2011 was well organised: there was sufficient space between the stalls, and all stalls were identical, free of any advertising banners (…). I think I’ll be back next year.”
Strohmeier (Austria)
“(…) I am taking this opportunity to tell you about the pleasant surprise we had during these three days of intensive work. It was really an event of great quality!”
Pares Balta (Spain)
The next Millésime Bio trade fair will be held from January 23 rd to 25 th , 2012 at the Montpellier Exhibition Centre.
