STERIPURE, a specialist in the pasteurisation and sterilisation of dry products, will start operating on 15 May 2012. STERIPURE will provide dry-produce processing companies with access to cutting-edge technology from its base in Aix-en-Provence (South-Eastern France).
Based in South-Eastern France, STERIPURE, an expert in the pasteurisation and sterilisation of herbs, spices, nuts, dried fruit and edible grain, will be open for business from mid-May of this year. The company’s service centre, in Aix-en-Provence, will allow STERIPURE to process a wide range of products for which microbiological load reduction is advantageous.
Set up in accordance with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) rules, STERIPURE is equipped with cutting-edge pasteurisation technology through the NAPASOL process. This process uses saturated steam under controlled pressure conditions, leading to optimal microbial reduction and a gentle processing of the produce.
The microorganisms found in dry products are removed using saturated steam in an autoclave, which is placed under vacuum. The combination of the vacuum and the saturated steam enables rapid sterilisation or pasteurisation of these delicate products at relatively low temperatures.
The NAPASOL method offers the benefit of efficient microbial reduction whilst not altering the produce, as the treatment occurs at low temperatures and no drying step is required. Olivier Bourgois, founder of STERIPURE, has already used such a process when at Eurovanille, a natural-vanilla producer, where he was a co-shareholder until 2010.
Since this is a batch-processing method where the produce is never in contact with the equipment’s surface, any risk of cross-contamination is ruled out. The NAPASOL process is thus particularly adapted to the needs of STERIPURE, which processes both large and small batches of produce.
In order to provide an efficient service, STERIPURE is based near the port city of Marseille and its region (on the Mediterranean coast of France), where it is close to the logistics streams of imported and exported products.
In order to improve the life cycle of the produce and to ensure food safety, industrialists and distributors are becoming increasingly demanding with respect to the microbial load tolerated in the ingredients they use. The levels are difficult to guarantee, since farming production is naturally exposed to environmental contaminants.
The services provided by STERIPURE will help businesses comply with technical specifications, or process contaminated batches of low-moisture products such as herbs and spices, dried plants, nuts, and all kinds of dried fruit.
Dried produce has long been seen as safe and free of any background products that encourage the development of pathogenic microorganisms, or of microorganisms that shorten the food’s lifecycle. Nevertheless, such dried produce has been involved in cases of food poisoning and product recalls.
In order to protect their brands, which may be damaged if they are subjected to a product recall or are blamed in a case of food poisoning, businesses have a great interest in getting a microbiological-reduction process in place for food with low moisture content. While some industries are currently investing in their own equipment, others will need to make use of the kind of service that STERIPURE provides.
About STERIPURE
STERIPURE uses a simple and innovative process to sterilise dry products — more particularly herbs, spices, nuts, dried fruit and edible grain.
STERIPURE will start trading on 15 May 2012; the company is based in Eguilles, near Aix-en-Provence (South-Eastern France).
The company will be at the IPA exhibition for the food-processing and packaging sector from 21 to 25 October 2012, in Paris (France).

REUNIPECHE, the foremost player in the fishing sector on Réunion island (France’s overseas département in the Indian Ocean), will take part in the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels (Belgium) from 24 to 26 April 2012. The company will be presenting various types of fish, including albacore and bigeye tuna, as well as coryphene sea bream.
An expert in the fishing, filleting and distribution of large deep-sea fish, REUNIPECHE specialises in swordfish, tunny, albacore, yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna, among other species that it commercializes.
Albacore, yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna yielded prolific catches in 2011. In the same year, there was also an unusually large catch of coryphene sea bream and mahi-mahi, which are — whether fresh or frozen — greatly appreciated by American consumers, in particular.
REUNIPECHE will be present at the European Seafood Exposition on Stand 5-301. The event will take place from 24 to 26 April of this year, in the Belgian capital.
REUNIPECHE is based on Réunion island, which is an overseas French département located near Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. REUNIPECHE’s fishing is concentrated in the seas off the southern and eastern coasts of Madagascar, around Réunion, and in waters around Mauritius. To the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), this is Zone 51, which encompasses the Western Indian Ocean. The sheer wealth of species in Réunion waters allows the company to present a wide range of fish only accessible to deep-sea-fishing operators, and those fish include marlin, shark and sailfish, among others.
Most catches are pulled in live, which guarantees their freshness and quality. The fish are then killed using the Taniguchi method, developed in Japan, whereby nylon wire is threaded through the fish’s nerve centres. As a result, the fish does not become stressed, hence no toxins are released in the process. The fish is then cooled in a brine tub containing iced seawater, prior to being preserved on ice inside a refrigerated hold.
REUNIPECHE specialises in quality products and prides itself on being very meticulous in the way that it catches, stores, cuts, packs and transports the fish. The company’s products are labelled Class Extra in terms of food certification, and can be prepared raw without any problem.
Export sales account for 50% of REUNIPECHE’s turnover, especially in fresh swordfish and tuna filets. Since the start of 2012, REUNIPECHE has been supplying the Japanese market: each and every week, four tonnes of fish are shipped out to the Tokyo market, directly from Réunion island.
Already established on the European, Asian and American markets, REUNIPECHE seeks to continue developing its export business. The company, more particularly, intends to focus its efforts on the Japanese and Russian markets.
About REUNIPECHE
REUNIPECHE is based in Saint-Denis de la Réunion, on Réunion island. It is an integrated business that covers the entire fish-distribution supply chain: from the catching of the fish to its delivery to wholesalers. The company also works closely with various fishing fleets.
REUNIPECHE provides fresh, high-quality products complete with certificate of origin and a health-responsibility guarantee (CEE agreement). Fresh deep-sea fish sold by REUNIPECHE comes from a fleet of 17 boats that unload about 1,500 tonnes per year.
Concerned with the environment, REUNIPECHE is also associated with a shelter that takes care of local turtles. Accordingly, the company’s fishermen are fully equipped to collect any injured turtles and hand them over to veterinarians.
REUNIPECHE will be present at the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels (Belgium) on Stand 5-301. The event will take place from 24 to 26 April 2012 in the Belgian capital.

Brigitte Lurton is a wholesaler specialising in wines from the French terroir that are sold under the BRIGITTE LURTON brand. Brigitte Lurton, owner of the brand and the business named after her, hopes to demonstrate that wine is an accessible product, even for beginners. She will be presenting her brand at the London International Wine Fair from 22 to 24 May 2012, at the ExCeL exhibition centre, in London (England).
BRIGITTE LURTON has created a range of five wines that it plans to extend in the future. The company’s offering will be showcased at the London International Wine Fair (LIWF) on stand F40/7, from 22 to 24 May of this year; the trade show is due to take place at ExCeL, in Docklands (London). Brigitte Lurton, owner and founder of the business going by the same name, is intent on sharing her passion for French wine and winegrowing with British and international consumers.
The wine in the BRIGITTE LURTON range is bottled on the various estates and each of the selected winegrowers practises sustainable agriculture. The wines in this range have an ageing potential of four to five years.
Thanks to its good value — the wines are priced at less than €10, i.e. under £8.50, per bottle — and its uncluttered, easy-to-read labels, this range of wine is easily accessible to consumers, in what can be a daunting market. With their blue and coral colours, the labels are atypical, and they highlight pictograms that show the best food-and-wine combinations. To help consumers find out more about the wine they wish to buy, flashcodes have also been placed on the bottles.
BRIGITTE LURTON wines encourage consumers to explore little-known appellations by offering wines from southern and south-western France that were chosen for their authentic character, and which faithfully represent their region of origin.
The range includes a Côtes Catalanes red made from pure Grenache grapes; two Coteaux du Salagou wines made from Viognier grapes (one red and one white); a local red country wine (or vin de pays) from Lot, made exclusively from Malbec grapes; and, finally, a red country wine from Montauban.
The production of those wines is controlled as per a list of technical specifications regulating the winemaking process and the bottling of the wine. This list was produced through a collaborative effort with Brigitte Lurton’s sister, Marie-Laure Lurton, who owns several estates in the Bordeaux region of south-western France.
Bottled in lightweight Ecova bottles, the BRIGITTE LURTON wines are produced in an environmentally friendly manner. As for the boxes for packing the wine, they are made up of 50% recycled material. The range’s stoppers are made of cork, and are therefore natural and biodegradable.
In addition to designing a new bottle, BRIGITTE LURTON has recently created a website to better provide information about its wines, presenting the grapes used, the soils where the vines are grown, but also the tourism side of the industry. The website explains the pictograms found on the bottles. Furthermore, a BRIGITTE LURTON smartphone application is available, enabling consumers to follow the company’s news and developments in its wine range while on the move.
About BRIGITTE LURTON
BRIGITTE LURTON, the company, was founded by Brigitte Lurton on the back of her expertise in winemaking. Indeed, Brigitte is a member of one of the Bordeaux region’s most prominent families — the Lurton family owns and manages a large number of estates.
Brigitte Lurton has spent 30 years in close contact with the world of wines and winemaking, both in France and elsewhere. She is now embracing wine wholesaling, specialising in wines from the terroir, through her company.
The company will be present at the London International Wine Fair 2012 (LIWF 2012) from 22 to 24 May 2012 on stand F40/7, at the ExCeL exhibition centre, in London (UK).

HEINEKEN, the international brewer and Europe’s largest, has chosen the platform developed by EcoVadis of France in order to assess and improve sustainability in its supply chain. The EcoVadis platform, tailored to the needs of the brewing industry, will help HEINEKEN drive up its CSR performance, and that of its suppliers.
David Spacey, Global Procurement Director at international brewer HEINEKEN, states, “The development and rigorous implementation of sustainable procurement policies is a key element of HEINEKEN’s Brewing a Better Future agenda. HEINEKEN has a strong preference to do business only with organisations that share [its] values of respect for the planet and [its] ethical business principles. Our buyer’s discussions with suppliers have included environmental and social issues since 2005, but, after recently benchmarking against other companies’ standards, we chose to raise the bar, increasing our expectations and updating our Supplier Code.”
“Acknowledging that driving our CSR [or Corporate Social Responsibility] standards into, and through, our supply chain is both about assuring current performance as well as driving improvement, we invested time in finding a CSR performance-measurement platform that could meet all our requirements. After extensive reviews of the alternatives, we have chosen to utilise the EcoVadis platform," continues David Spacey.
The EcoVadis platform allows HEINEKEN to monitor risks within the supplier base, which spans more than 100 countries, while identifying suppliers’ innovative sustainability practices. The EcoVadis platform will allow HEINEKEN buyers access to easy-to-use and reliable sustainability ratings, on a global scale. These ratings cover 21 environmental and social criteria, and measure compliance with the key elements of HEINEKEN’s Supplier Code.
At the end of 2005, HEINEKEN adopted its first Supplier Code dedicated to supply-chain responsibility. The code is aimed at sourcing products and services in a responsible manner: it obliges suppliers to operate in accordance with the principles that the code sets out.
In 2011, HEINEKEN decided to reinforce this policy through a collaborative platform that allowed for the evaluation and improvement of its key suppliers’ environmental and social performance. The company selected the EcoVadis platform for this purpose.
HEINEKEN and EcoVadis also collaborated in order to develop specific questionnaires and scoring models covering certain malt, hops and grains categories that come into the beer-making process. After a successful pilot programme covering 150 strategic suppliers in 2011, the EcoVadis solution is now being rolled out on a global basis by HEINEKEN.
“The EcoVadis solution offers an excellent combination of self-assessment, 360-degree supporting-evidence evaluation, and inter-industry competitor benchmarking. The ease of access and usability for both our large supplier base and our global procurement community was also a key factor,” explains David Spacey of HEINEKEN.
“We did not want to deploy a generic assessment, but to address the specific lifecycle challenges of each of our core spend categories. The EcoVadis platform is a great solution to support this initiative with our suppliers and with our global procurement community,” continues David Spacey.
In a study, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) stated, “Businesses should use databases like EcoVadis […] as they collect and distribute data about suppliers and they provide buyers with an integrated supplier assessment tool focused on sustainable-development indicators.”
Pierre-François Thaler, Managing Director and Co-Founder of EcoVadis, says, “We are very happy to collaborate with HEINEKEN, which is the first brewer to have engaged in such an advanced, sustainable supply-chain programme, going beyond the traditional social-compliance approaches. Through this collaborative platform, HEINEKEN and EcoVadis also wish to give the possibility to other big FMCG companies [in the sector of fast-moving consumer goods] to participate, in order to improve the environmental and social conditions of supply chains.”
About HEINEKEN
HEINEKEN is an independent global brewer that employs 70,000 people, and was founded by the Heineken family. HEINEKEN is present in over 70 countries and operates more than 140 breweries, selling 214 million hectolitres of beer.
The company is Europe’s largest brewer and the world’s third largest brewer, in terms of volume. In 2011, HEINEKEN’s revenue totalled €17.1 billion and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) stood at €2.7 billion.
HEINEKEN is committed to the responsible marketing of its 200 international premium, regional, local and specialty beers and ciders. These include Amstel, Birra Moretti, Cruzcampo, Desperados, Dos Equis, Foster’s, Heineken, Newcastle Brown Ale, Ochota, Primus, Sagres, Sol, Star, Strongbow, Tecate and Zywiec. The group’s leading joint-venture brands are Anchor, Cristal, Kingfisher and Tiger.
HEINEKEN N.V. and HEINEKEN Holding N.V. shares are listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, in Amsterdam (The Netherlands). Prices for the ordinary shares may be accessed on Bloomberg under the symbols HEIA NA and HEIO NA and on the Reuters Equities 2000 Service under HEIN.AS and HEIO.AS.

February and March tend to be busy for us, at the Press Office of the French Trade Commission in London, and this year has not been different overall, if only because there are many trade shows over the period, several of them international trade shows of reference taking place in London or Birmingham.
Despite the serious uncertainties still clouding the economic horizon across Europe, the consensus view, among many businesses I have come across, both French and British, seems to be that the economy, in the UK and in France, has started picking up, and many observers appear to believe that a sustained recovery will be on the way in 2013 — barring any crisis of a financial or monetary nature in the next few months, that is, in the Eurozone or elsewhere…
Certain sectors of activity have undeniably been affected very badly by the recession (fashion accessories, furniture and interior design, for instance), but others are showing strong growth. This is true, more particularly, of industries that are — or are perceived to be — built around the technologies of the future, such as biotechnology, IT, energy and the environment, security and defence, and a few more.
Technologies and companies that enable client entities to cut costs and/or to enhance security seem to be doing rather well. They include software providers in the field of compliance, information security and the integrity of the critical IT infrastructure; specialists in alternative forms of energy; eco-building players, and so on.
Beyond the gloomy macro-economic headlines that can dominate the front pages of national newspapers at times, there lies a more complex reality, at micro-economic level, which can come as a welcome relief.
Certain niche sectors have been left unscathed, too. I was recently talking to BEABA , a French company specialising in quality products for very young children and babies (such as feeding bottles and high chairs), and their representative in the UK explained to me that they are doing well: parents are not prepared to cut spending on what they regard as essentials for their kids.
An area that is experiencing growth is e-health projects, since applying advanced wireless-telecommunications technology to the management and provision of health-care services can help provide patients with a better service that is also cheaper. Typically, such services are used to monitor patients in their own home, thus freeing up hospital beds. It can also apply to elderly people, who can then be kept safely at home — a solution that suits everyone.
This was the main topic covered by the press trip we organised at the end of January (26 to 27). We sent five journalists over to Paris for this press trip: three from the UK, one Swedish reporter, and one Danish editor. The press trip was a success and we are now liaising with the journalists with a view to retrieving the articles they said they would write, and send them over to our client, ParisRegion , the agency for the development of Paris and its region.
We have another press trip in the pipeline — or, should I say, on the rails — for mid-June (11 to 15), which will take a delegation of journalists from various countries (including Britain) to Northern France, and will focus on railway transport and technology. If you write about this topic, do get in touch with Katherine Woods, Press Officer, who will be happy to give you further details as soon as we have them. This press trip is organised by Nord France Invest, the development agency for Lille and its region, with which we have worked extensively in the past already.
Among the trade shows we have covered in the past couple of months, Hotelympia (26 February to 1 March) at the EXCEL exhibition centre, in Docklands (London), constituted a major event encompassing food & drink as well as interior design, furniture, etc in relation to the hotel sector.
Another key industry event, in a completely different sector — this time, marine and sub-sea technology — was Oceanology , coupled with Interspill (13 to 15 March), also at EXCEL . There were two French Pavilions, one in each trade show. Among the French exhibitors at the trade fair, we worked closely with Ecoceane , a truly innovative company that has developed a unique range of anti-pollution vessels that are highly efficient when collecting floating waste (be it debris, litter or hydrocarbons).
Ecoceane’s vessels are suited to all configurations, from the high seas to shallow harbours: they hoover up the waste in a highly effective way. The company’s ships were in action in the Gulf of Mexico, in 2010: they succeed in collecting the waterborne waste in an emulsion-free manner. Ecoceane’s WORKGLOP® 128 vessel, which was moored alongside the exhibition centre, demonstrated what it can do at EXCEL .
The Ecobuild trade show (20 to 22 March), also at EXCEL , is another important trade fair on our calendar, and the French Pavilion showcased close to 20 companies specialising in environmentally friendly construction. You can access our press release about MATHIS , a leader in glued, laminated timber frames, below: they had a stand at Ecobuild .
Last but not least, the Cercle Rive Droite wine tasting organised by our colleagues of the Food & Drink Department on 15 March at Le Méridien , in Central London, proved a great success. It enabled representatives of the wine trade and specialist wine writers to discover for themselves the 2011 vintage of the Cercle syndicate of winegrowers. Those growers, whose estates are located on the right bank of the River Garonne (i.e. north of the river and north of Bordeaux), include big names such as Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Fronsac .
The tasting attracted many journalists, including Jancis Robinson of the Financial Times , Jane Mac Quitty of The Times , and Oz Clarke. The Cercle unveils its new vintage in three different places successively, each year: the USA, then London, and finally Hong Kong. I can confirm that the appellations of Cercle Rive Droite are second to none, having done my best to try as many of the wines on offer as was possible.
We remain eclectic at the Press Office of the French Trade Commission, as you will see from our selection of stories below, which range from mobile communications and aircraft interiors to specialist hoses for thermal-solar-energy installations, and from fruit & vegetables to the clouds (i.e. Cloud computing, to be precise).
And let us not forget YOUPIG — the name of a pre-starter feed for porkers, in case you were wondering what was meant here. We are told the pigs love it: survey upon survey of international porkers, voting with their eager snouts, has proved it, from Spain and Greece to Hungary and Romania. YOUPIG will soon be available in the UK, to the wild cheers of live, mobile tubs of British bacon on four legs.
The next issue of UBIFRANCE UK will come out towards the end of May. Till then, you can follow us on Twitter in real time ( https://twitter.com/ at @UBIFRANCE_UK).

The French Trade Commission UBIFRANCE in London set up, for the first time ever, a French Pavilion at the Packaging Innovations trade fair, which was held in Birmingham (England) from 29 February to 1 March 2012.
Half-a-dozen companies from France were on the Pavilion and they showcased a range of products, including, among others, pewter labels, collars for plastic bags machines, barrier films, PVC containers, printed cardboard pieces, and sleeves.
In the wake of the trade show, various orders have been signed already and a number of projects have been launched. Indeed, 50% of participants have indicated that they will want to participate in the event in a year’s time, which illustrates the success achieved.
Now in its eighth year, Packaging Innovations attracted 300 exhibitors and 5,000 trade visitors from a range of industries — from food and drinks to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

About Cercle Rive Droite
Le Cercle Rive Droite de Grands Vins de Bordeaux (The Right Bank Circle of Great Bordeaux Wines) was founded in July 2002 in order to promote fine wines from the region. The organisation groups together 139 châteaux. Its members produce wines from a diverse range of appellations, including Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. Cercle Rive Droite aims to promote the reputation of wines of the finest quality; all its wines are evaluated through blind tastings, which are held twice a year by an independent jury.
The Cercle Rive Droite advance tasting event will be held on Thursday 15 March 2012. It will take place from 4pm to 9pm at The Terrace Restaurant at Le Méridien Piccadilly (21 Piccadilly, London, W1J 0BH).
