French Tech showcases 11 winning start-ups at Dublin Tech Summit

France will have a strong presence at this year’s Dublin Web Summit, which is taking place in Ireland from 4 to 6 November 2014. Having been selected to take part by a panel of expert judges, a total of 11 innovative French start-ups will be exhibiting on the UBIFRANCE pavilion. In 2013, over 10,000 people attended the Dublin Web Summit. This year, the organisers are expecting 20,000 visitors from over 100 countries, 1,000 exhibiting start-ups and 500 speakers, making the Dublin Web Summit an unmissable event in the technology sector. CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES unveils mega-powerful SA75 switching amplifiers

CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES of France, in partnership with G2ELab, has developed a new range of powerful amplifiers using switching amplifier technology. The company’s SA75D model is the most powerful amplifier on the market for piezo actuators and is designed for applications that demand reactive power (anti-vibration, fast actuation, vibration generation, etc.) in sectors  such as aeronautics, machine tools and large instruments. CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES of France develops high-performance, cutting-edge actuators and piezoelectric motors. Its new SA75 range of switching amplifiers has been designed to harness the performance of its powerful piezo actuators (APA® and PPA in L and XL) from -20V to +150V under dynamic conditions. It also includes energy-recovery capacities, allowing consumption to be reduced by a factor of 10.   Traditionally, piezoelectric actuators are used at low frequencies for optical-positioning systems, but new dynamic-actuation requirements have been introduced into fields such as aeronautics (flaps) and machine tools (vibration assistance). When static, actuators may be adequately supplied by a linear amplifier thanks to their low noise and harmonic distortion.   The LA75C linear amplifier, developed by CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES, is a perfect example of this, but its main drawback is the power consumed — hence, dissipated — which makes it necessary to have a large heat sink for limited power output (maximum 2.4A at 170V peak to peak for the LA75C). An advantage of the new SA75X amplifier is the low level of active power taken from the grid with respect to the high reactive power supplied by the piezo load. This has been made possible thanks to the exceptional yield obtained through the SA75X amplifier’s energy-recovery capacities. This opens up opportunities in fields where embedded applications are used, such as aeronautics.   High-power linear amplifiers cannot be miniaturised but, compared with competing technology, CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES’ piezo actuators are relatively compact in terms of the mechanical energy that they are able to produce. In order to fully exploit this advantage, it is necessary to miniaturise the drivers, more particularly for embedded applications. It is for this reason that CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES has developed a new range of powerful amplifiers using switching amplifier technology.   The SA75D is the most powerful amplifier on the market for piezo actuators. It is able to produce an average alternating current output of up to 20A at 170V peak to peak, representing a world record for low-voltage piezo drivers. This 20-amp current can be maintained indefinitely. Compared with the LA75C linear amplifier, this high-intensity amplifier will help to increase piezo-actuator speed and amplitude by up to a factor of 10. It will also help to control the largest piezo stacks (C>100uF) under dynamic conditions of permanent operation. The amplifiers provided by CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES are designed to switch at very high frequencies (typically 100kHz) and include an optimised-voltage closed loop to ensure that the output voltage waveform is as ordered. These aspects provide a high resolution, which yields a highly satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio (SNR>60dB).   The switching power amplifiers are compatible with RK racking products and perform in either a linear continuous state or purely On/Off states when applied to piezo actuators with extremely fast actuations. The switching technique allows high current peaks, required by impulse or by high-frequency applications on large piezo actuators.   Further benefits of the SA75X amplifier are its range versatility, featuring three versions (SA75A, B and C) that can manage single or multiple channels, and its compatibility with all CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES electronic (SG, ECS, UC45 and UC65) ranges.   As with all CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES’ products, the SA75 range of amplifiers has applications in such sectors as aeronautics (flap actuation, fast valves, etc.), energy, large instruments (shakers, fatigue testing, etc.), microelectronics, optronics, photonics, production machinery (anti-vibration and vibration-assistance machinery), and space.   The development of the SA75 range was made possible thanks to co-operation between CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES and the Grenoble Electrical Engineering Laboratory (or G2ELab), part of the Université Joseph Fourier (UJF), in Grenoble (in south-eastern France). PELLENC ST installs another 23 waste-processing optical sorters in UK

PELLENC Selective Technologies (PELLENC ST) of France, a manufacturer of optical sorting machines for the processing of waste, has announced that it will supply 23 optical sorters (on stream from 2015) to equip four new facilities in the UK. The specialist company, which has considerably strengthened its presence on the British market, will showcase its latest solutions at the RWM trade show, to be held in Birmingham (England) from 16 to 18 September 2014. Following the company’s successful expansion into the British market, PELLENC Selective Technologies (or PELLENC ST) has announced that it will, once again, be an exhibitor (Stand 5R130) at the RWM trade show, which will take place at the NEC, in Birmingham (England), between 16 and 18 September of this year. PELLENC ST, a recognised specialist in its field, designs, manufactures and installs optical sorting machines for the recycling and processing of waste.   The contract to equip four new facilities in the UK, which will be in operation as of 2015, represents the strongest growth PELLENC ST has ever known on the British market, where its current installed stock is of about 80 units. The new facilities equipped with PELLENC ST optical sorters will all be dealing with Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).   The PELLENC ST systems will be used for two main purposes: first of all, to recover valuable materials from the stream (such as plastics) and, second, to monitor the quality of the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) fraction produced.   RDF monitoring units are attracting ever more interest in the UK as many large-scale Energy from Waste (EfW) projects have recently come to the fore. The current trend indicates that there is a bright future for this application in Britain. Thanks to experience gathered from its related work elsewhere in Europe, PELLENC ST has acquired proven expertise in this field and has been served, in this respect, by the high levels of accuracy that its technology achieves.   PELLENC ST has developed dedicated software programs in order to improve the monitoring of the sorting lines, which enables the company to better meet the specific needs of the municipal solid-waste market. In most cases, the waste is destined to be burnt and used as RDF: as a result, data about the quality of the stream — its humidity level or its degree of contamination, for example — is very useful.    The Lower Heating Value (LHV) should be monitored and should meet a range of parameters in order to ensure that the machine operates properly. Humidity is an important factor for the optimal operation of incineration plants. In fact, too much humidity not only leads to a potential drop in production, but can also activate fermentation in the storage of RDF — the ultimate risk being one of explosion and fire in the storage tank.   The final parameter to be considered is the level of chlorine in the RDF: the chlorine content is calculated on the basis of the volume of material containing PVC that is present — something that the machine is able to detect.   PELLENC ST proposes a solution with four groups of indicators that enables users to benefit from the performance of optical sorters and the data they produce. Optical sorters analyse the stream of waste passing through them, combining every available indicator: contaminants, energy, humidity, and stream.   The Statistic Pack, PELLENC ST’s new software suite, can be customised by selecting the most appropriate indicator for the sort configuration. With this pack, users can monitor even more closely the changes in waste types. Data is stored in files that are compatible with standard data-handling software and available over local networks using a web browser. On request, the teams at PELLENC ST are able to study the flow and fine-tune indicators in order to suit the product stream.   In addition, with a view to meeting specific measures introduced under the amended Environmental Permitting Regulations, the technologies developed by PELLENC ST offer not only complete monitoring of the waste stream, but also comprehensive monitoring of the sorted products. French cybersecurity firms increasingly successful in fast-growing market

In 2013, there was a 12% year-on-year rise in cybersecurity attacks, with nearly 60% of them causing either brand damage or direct revenue loss to businesses. This, coupled with highly publicized commercial and government breaches of IT security, has increased the demand for cybersecurity services. French companies are strongly placed in this growing market and their advanced solutions are in demand.     The 12% year-on-year increase in cybersecurity attacks that affected businesses in 2013 (Source: IBM 2014 Cyber Security Intelligence Index ), regrettable as it may be, translates into the fact that the IT-security sector is experiencing sustained growth in this segment of the market. High-profile cases, such as the cyber-attacks on US retail chain Target, have raised awareness among business executives.   While US-based and British companies dominate current business in this sector, client entities are looking for alternatives in order to alleviate their worries of government intrusion. In this respect, French specialist companies are a strong contender in the eyes of many professionals and executives working for SMEs and start-ups, but also at established, larger groups: these clients are leveraging the French know-how stemming from top R&D centres and universities.   In 2013, the French cybersecurity sector was valued at more than $2 billion. France adds zest to its gourmet exports with So French So Good

What else does one expect from France, where gastronomic standards are so high? Yet, cultivating gourmets’ taste buds the world over also pays off in economic terms: French gourmet products and fine foods, as a sector, are worth €7 billion, encompassing 250 product categories and amounting to 16% of the French food industry’s total exports. In this field, French exporters total 1,200 companies, 90% of which are SMEs. What may be mainstream in France, in terms of fine foods and culinary excellence, the rest of the world often perceives as symbolizing culinary art that can only be Made in France. Christophe Monnier, in charge of the Fine Foods Department at French export-support agency UBIFRANCE, describes a high-end market that is both diverse and dynamic. Baked goods, biscuits and chocolate account for 50% of French exports of gourmet products. Within this segment of the market, two characteristically French trends stand out. First, there is an absolute respect for authentic flavours and for regional and local traditions, as neatly summed up by the French concept of terroir. Each gourmet product has its own story to tell, unlike any other, which is also its unique selling point. Secondly, with health concerns and awareness of dietary issues coming to the fore, carefully prepared, organic and eco-friendly branded products coming from France have gained worldwide recognition and the trust of consumers, and rightly so. Major players in the fine-foods sector such as Valona (high-quality chocolates), Rougie (foie gras), Bridor (French bakery products) and Boiron Frères (fruit and vegetable coulis), among many others, are being increasingly proactive when providing international clients with their exclusive products and unrivalled expertise. And of course, reliable logistics is the name of the game. Central and Eastern Europe offered even bigger opportunities for expansion, with sales rising strongly in Russia (13.5%) and in Austria (17.1%). In fact, the further exporters went, the bigger the rewards could be: in the Far East, exports of fine-food products from France rose markedly, from Hong Kong (up 12.8%) to Singapore (up 14.3%). In mainland China, the figures were even more impressive, with sales up by 33.3%. In the Middle East, companies marketing gourmet food products to Dubai (UAE) and Saudi Arabia were rewarded with a growth rate exceeding 20%. Christophe Monnier stresses the importance of three trade events for the promotion of French excellence in fine foods. SIAL and EUROPAIN, which are known to be leading trade shows where deals get done — more particularly in the field of consumer products — are two. The ultimate culinary event, however, has to be the Cuisine Summit at the SIRHA  trade fair, in Lyons, explains Christophe Monnier. All the French know-how in the industry is mustered in order to create an exceptional experience across 40,000 square metres of floor space. Numberly and Albatross map out Journey of a Luxury Consumer

London (UK) — Numberly, a digital-data marketing firm specialising in helping advertisers leverage their marketing strategies, and Albatross Global Solutions, a market-research firm specialising in improving retail performance and understanding consumer trends in the luxury sector, have teamed up to study the behaviour and expectations of today’s consumer of luxury goods. Their latest, exclusive study will be unveiled at a joint event in central London on 3 July 2014.  The work conducted by numberly, together with Albatross Global Solutions, has made it possible to measure how consumers of luxury goods engage in the luxury experience, both at boutiques and online. In September 2013, numberly, in partnership with Albatross, held a similar event in New York City (USA): the two companies unveiled their first report of its kind into the behaviour and the expectations of luxury-sector consumers. Each study has been conducted to high standards, with a survey polling 3,290 relevant consumers, i.e. individuals who have purchased a luxury product in the six months prior to the study. The consumers polled came from North America (USA), Latin America (Brazil), the Far East (China and Japan), and Europe (various EU countries). Boiron Frères unveils 6 new flavours in vegetable purées/ semi-candied fruit

Boiron Frères of France, a specialist in fruit-and-vegetable processing for the catering trade, is enhancing its range with six new flavours, which come in a purée (butternut squash, green asparagus, beetroot and yuzu) or in a semi-candied mix (lemon and orange). The company already sells an impressive 70-flavour range under the Les Vergers Boiron brand, making it an international leader in frozen fruit and vegetable purées.   Boiron Frères of France is a specialist in fruit processing that has recently diversified into vegetable processing too. The company, thanks to extensive research and innovation, is now diversifying its range of flavours and products destined for the catering trade and gastronomy professionals. For its vegetable line, under the Les Vergers Boiron brand, Boiron Frères now offers three ‘homemade-grade’ novelty purées designed for chefs and caterers: butternut squash, green asparagus, and beetroot. All three are 100% natural and free from preservatives, artificial colouring and thickening agents. The vegetables are processed using a new, cutting-edge tool that delivers a taste and texture that are equivalent to the best of homemade purées. Packaged in 1kg trays for optimal food safety and immediately frozen, the purées are easy to use. The formula chosen by Boiron Frères guarantees that there is no waste for the catering professional, while costs are kept under control. This unique know-how, which is the company’s hallmark, makes a lot of sense when processing vegetables such as those, which usually require a lengthy and potentially tedious preparation phase. Regarding its citrus line, Boiron Frères found its inspiration in the Far East, in countries such as Japan, China and Korea, where yuzu is traditionally grown.
